What is this thing, anyway?
It's pretty simple, actually. In January 2016, I wanted to start a press. But not just any press. I wanted to cultivate a space where all the stuff I really love to read -- but can't really find published in most places -- could be published. I knew that, if it's stuff I want to read and stuff I am writing, I could guess that other people are wanting to read and write it, too. And have it published somewhere awesome.
Paper Lion Press aims to be that awesome place.
I want edgy stuff. I want stuff that pushes boundaries, that calls privilege into question, that makes my skin crawl a bit when I read it. I want to publish work that makes me ask questions, learn more, and take the time to educate myself to be a better ally and a better human being. I want stuff that I'm not even sure I could identify yet.
The Lion's Tail is the beginning of this publishing journey for us here at Paper Lion Press. Beginning in August 2016, we seek to publish a monthly piece of long-form literary narrative or creative non-fiction. As a long-form writer, I struggle to find places that will accept submissions over 2000 words. But that's the writing that lights me on fire. Well-written, long-form essays spark a discussion inside my brain and in the world around me. While not seeking to be the antithesis of Brevity, I really want to focus on the strong, talented long-form writers who are often not read in mainstream or major literary publications. Inspired by The Believer, which is known for such incredible long-form pieces as this one by Esme Weijun Wang or this by Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah, The Lion's Tail aims to publish high-quality long-form essays that make you think, make you ask questions, and leave you wanting more.
